This project, the brainchild of 3 Boulder, Colorado glassblowers, recycles glass containers. From this waste material, they are able to craft practical items for everyday use, such as drinking glasses and vases. Besides being a unique conversation piece, these items are an inexpensive way to make your household more "green". Since the process to create these is fairly artistic in nature, no two are identical.
The Process
Each piece of glass is thoroughly cleaned and checked for any imperfections (these can introduce undo stress during the conversion process). Suitable pieces are then warmed in a kiln, preparing them for the intense heat of the glassworkers furnace. Once the conversion process starts in the furnace, the artisans continually rotate the glass. Glass cools to an unworkable temperature quickly, so the artisans are constantly moving back and forth between the furnace and work station, working the glass to the desired shape. Once the desired shape has been reached, the items undergo an overnight cooling process, bringing the item back to it's original strength.
The Glass
Our current inventory of bottles includes Corona, Coronita, Red Stripe, Rolling Rock, Cerveza Sol, Stone, Mickey's, Mickey's Grenades, Pellegrino, and various wine bottles. We reclaim glass from a number of bars in the Denver/ Boulder area, and do receive specialty liquor bottles from time to time. These specialty bottles will be used for limited edition items, and may show up on this site at any time. If you have a restaurant or bar in the Denver/ Boulder area and are interested in donating glass to this project, please contact us to work out the details.
